What is tree competition?
As trees compete, some capture more amounts of sunlight, water, air and nutrients in order to survive and grow while others die or grow slowly.
what is an unhealthy tree stand?
Forests that have closely spaced trees may be unhealthy because too many trees are in competition. These forests are vulnerable to disease, fire, drought and other threats.
How can i best promote healthy trees?
In nature forests are not uniform in structure, function or appearance. They are comprised of stands in different stages of development. Managing for diversity is generally beneficial.
in response to climate change, should one look forward to potential changes in tree species composition and plant based on that?
As temperatures on average continue to rise, it is worthwhile to consider planting tree species or seedlings from the same species that are adapted to warmer and drier conditions. This does not mean that you should not plant species adapted to your current area, but to supplement with trees of the same species from lower elevation or latitude.
Seed is collected from seed zones in California. In the past, we would have planted seeds from very close nearby to best match the site conditions. Some agencies are now recommending using seed from 500 feet lower in elevation or from a seed zone farther south. Though different species may be more adapted to your site now, with warmer climate, we don’t actually have a lot of good science to give advice about which new species to use. Some of that research work is being done now. Having a diversity of species and seed sourcing of the same species is a good strategy to hedge your bets against all kinds of uncertainty. Be sure to ask your Registered Professional Forester for input on these planting decisions. |
